Breed: cocker spaniel

Story, Personality, Others:
Lassie was adopted from us 5 years ago together with her son. They were both young dogs. Now they are not young anymore but their owners decided to change their lives, they sold the house, bought a caravan and went back to their country of origin. Without the dogs.
They brought them back to us and actually they said they had someone who wanted to adopt them and would be contacting is in 2 weeks (probably invented this so we would accept them but we would accept them anyway). Now it seems the person who wanted to adopt them has a house construction related troubles and is not adopting the dogs but we did not really count on that anyway…
The owners did not vaccinate the dogs for 4 years… Only rushed to the vet when they decided to bring them back.
How can someone give away the dogs that they had for 5 years??
Cookie and Lassie are such nice dogs. Gentle, calm, friendly, good on the leash. They are used to living in a home, this is where they spent most of their lives. To dump them in the shelter is plainly cruel.
Cookie, the son, has been adopted already.
